Valued Assistants

Brian Hewett: CCCMA Stage Manager
Introduction to My Musical Background
My elder brother was an exceptionally talented guitarist who performed as ‘The Yodelling Cowboy’ on Frank Ifield’s radio show every Sunday on station 2KA during the 1950s. He generously shared his musical knowledge with me, teaching me several chords on the guitar. Our father also contributed to our family’s musical heritage by playing the ukulele and Hawaiian steel guitar. Growing up, I was surrounded by the sounds of country music, listening to iconic artists such as Hank Williams, Reg Lindsay, Hank Snow, Wilf Carter, and Slim Whitman.
Professional Journey in Northern Territory
From the ages of 21 to 29, I worked in the Northern Territory. Much of my work took place on semi-deserted cattle stations and within Aboriginal communities. During this time, I carried an old guitar with me throughout the Northern Territory. Occasionally, I would perform at outback pubs in exchange for a few beers, singing popular songs by Slim Dusty.
The Guitar Discovery
One of the most intriguing moments of my musical journey occurred when I stumbled upon a Takamine guitar in the bush. Remarkably, it was missing its back and ribs. The circumstances surrounding its presence there remain a mystery. Despite its condition—lacking not only the back and ribs but also strings, nut, and pegs—the guitar showed no signs of significant damage and appeared as though it hadn’t been exposed to the elements for long. With determination, I crafted new ribs and a back for the instrument and successfully reassembled it
In 2017 I joined the CCCMA performing on a regular basis at the 1st Sunday of each moth Roundup at the Halekulani Bowling Club, Budgewoi.
